“The problem of producing vital pattern is a very real one to the artist-craftsman. He can no longer depend upon the support and restraint of any particular tradition but must form his own synthesis and invert his own creative designs, for patterns should rise out of the need and experience of today and not from that of yesterday.”

Bernard Leach, A Potter’s Book. Page 102. Faber and Faber, 1940.

“What distinguishes good artistic license from bad is whether the artist acquired all access to relative information before the creativity begins. Perhaps Mark Twain said it best. ‘Get your facts first and then you can distort them as much as you please.’”

Fresh Pottery Friday: Cup Giveaway, Nuka Cobalt

“Standard Ware, Nuka Cobalt Cups” are pictured below. “Standard Ware” describe a type of pottery that is simple, durable and meant for everyday use. “Nuka” describes a historical Japanese glaze made with wood ashes, giving the glaze rustic colors that reflect the natural impurities in local wood ashes harvested from my region here in Minnesota. “Cobalt” describes the color blue, which comes from raw cobalt powder. This glaze combination is bright and complex, yet easy enough to reproduce that we can offer it for lower prices than Outer Space or Mountain Inspired pottery. To get more of these pots out into the world, we’re giving away two Nuka Cobalt cups, absolutely free:

“I never wanted color to be color. I never wanted texture to be texture, or images to become shapes. I wanted them all to fuse together into a living spirit.”

– Clyfford Still, Abstract Expressionist Painter

Fresh Pottery Friday: Moon Mug Giveaway

The newest Moon Mugs are getting more complex. Intricate textures that resemble crater impacts are meticulously carved, poked and pressed into each porcelain mug. You can actually watch a demo of me creating Moon Mugs in this Facebook video. The surface colors require tediously brushing on black, blue or rusty iron, before wiping colors away using an “Inlay Technique” inspired by these Korean Potters. Our pots and tools are different, but the resulting surfaces are the same: gorgeous textures that are truly one-of-a-kind. To get more of these into the hands of more people, I’m giving away one of my best Moon Mugs:

This pot was fired three times to achieve a deep orange hue. The interior colors dripped together in the repeated firings, creating layers of complexity. To win this Moon Mug totally free ($160 retail: $145 + $15 packing and shipping) simply respond to the survey below, letting us know which of my @cherricopottery Instagram photos you like best before this Sunday at 11:59pm.
